Based on the internationally best-selling book by Robert Macfarlane, UNDERLAND is a voyage into the depths of the earth. Narrated by Oscar-nominated Sandra Hüller (The Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall), with an original score by Hannah Peel (Game of Thrones), director Robert Petit crafts a mesmerising cinematic experience, blending breathtaking visuals with a thoughtful meditation on time, memory and life upon this fragile surface.
Travelling alongside several ‘astronauts of the underworld’, the film journeys from the shallow soil beneath an ancient ash tree into the layered, hidden worlds below, through ancient cave systems, flooded storm drains, melting glaciers, underwater burial chambers, cast iron tombs storing nuclear waste, and a vast laboratory situated 2 kilometres below ground. Among our guides are archaeologist Fátima Tec Pool, who navigates the sprawling caves of the Mayan underworld in Yucatán, Mexico; urban explorer Bradley Garrett, who photographs lost subterranean spaces; and Mariangela Lisanti, a leading dark matter physicist whose work seeks to unravel some of the Universe’s biggest mysteries.
World premiering at Tribeca Film Festival 2025, UNDERLAND offers a rare documentary experience that serves simultaneously as visual splendour, environmental reckoning and philosophical enquiry, delivering beauty, science and wonder in equal measure. A profound reevaluation of the ground beneath our feet.
The original soundtrack to UNDERLAND by Hannah Peel will be released on 27 March 2026 by Rivertones.
